The sound of water crashing against rocks, the misty air, and the lush greenery that surrounds them make for the perfect backdrop for engagement photos. In this blog post, we'll explore why waterfall engagement photos are so special and share tips on how to make the most of your session.

Why Choose a Waterfall for Your Engagement Photos?

Waterfalls are an excellent choice for engagement photos because they offer a unique and picturesque setting that you can’t find anywhere else. Along with providing an amazing backdrop- hiking around a waterfall is a very cool experience and a fun thing to do with your partner. riya & Steve’s waterfall engagement session:

Riya and Steve love nature & the outdoors. Steve is a guide for rafting tours & loves to kayak through rapids and waterfalls- so we knew a waterfall location would be the perfect adventure for their engagement photo adventure session. We met up in the mid morning in the mountains of Washington and set off for a 3 mile roundtrip hike. This hike went along a river and was filled with dozens of waterfalls, ending at a 100ft cascading waterfall at the end. Riya & Steve’s day was filled with exploring, big smiles, and awe as they had their adventures captured on camera to remember for the rest of their lives.

The best locations for
waterfall engagement photos

If you’re sold on having a waterfall as the backdrop for your engagement session, the next steps is to figure out where/what waterfall to choose! There are about 17,000 waterfalls in the U.S.- so there are plenty of options to choose from! When it comes to picking a waterfall location, I recommend choosing a location that first isn’t too long of a hike (you don’t want to spend 3 hours just to get to your location!) and second that allows you to get close to the waterfall so you can get some amazing photos around it!
Here are the top 10 best waterfalls to explore for your engagement photos:

1. Marymere Falls- Olympic National Park:
Marymere Falls is less than a 2 mile hike to get too and gives you the opportunity to get up close
to the waterfall with some beautiful old growth forests surrounding you.

2. Panther Creek Falls- Columbia River Gorge:
A super accessible waterfall with beautiful cascading falls over some massive rocks.

3. Snoqualmie Falls- Washington:

or you can hike down to the water for some cool lower views.

A more narrow and tall waterfall- you can get some unique perspectives when hiking around this waterfall.

6. Comet Falls- Mount Rainier:
This is where Riya and Steve had their engagement session, a challenging 3 mile hike with
dozens of waterfalls along the way, ending at the massive comet falls that you can get super close too.

Tips for a Successful Waterfall
Engagement Session

1. Wear the Right Clothing

Choosing the right clothing for your waterfall engagement session is essential. Since you'll be surrounded by nature, it's best to wear clothes that ‘pop’ from the natural earthy tones of the enviornment. I think the colors yellow, red, orange, and white will help you stand out amongst the backdrop. Sometimes it’s best to bring a bright colored layer for those far away ‘hero shots’ then wear a more neutral color underneath for close up photos. Additionally, wear comfortable shoes with good tread, that are suitable for walking on uneven terrain.

2. Plan Ahead

Before your session, do some research on the waterfall location and plan your route.
You'll want to know the best vantage points and how to get there. Also, consider the time of day when planning your session.

3. Be Prepared for the Weather

Since waterfall engagement sessions take place outdoors, it's important to be prepared for the weather.
Check the forecast and bring appropriate clothing and accessories, such as raincoats or umbrellas, if necessary.
Also, be aware of the slippery rocks around the waterfall and wear appropriate footwear.

4. Choose an Experienced Photographer

An experienced photographer who has worked in the outdoors will know how to capture the perfect shot.
Look for a photographer who has experience shooting in natural settings and who understands how to use natural light to enhance your photos.
